The best laid marketing plans can be foiled if there isn’t careful attention to where the proverbial rubber hits the road. Underneath a well developed marketing plan comes customer management strategies. Understanding what to do, where to do it and when to do it is critical to optimizing revenues. Key questions need to be addressed: Is a key account strategy appropriate for our business (transactional, consultative or a mixture)? Or are there too many customers? If so, how do we identify let alone address their individual needs? Are we deploying state of the art technologies to do this? Or should we rely on face-to-face contact or telephone methods? Are we utilizing web based customer management strategies where they would be critical to effective management? Or have are we simply using the web because there is good software available? And what does it cost to serve each segment? Do we know? Often analysis of this parameter alone reveals clear distinctions in segments that are profitable and ones that not. A company may chose to retain a very expensive segment to serve for longer term strategic reasons (which need to be clearly identified) but it is still critical to know where these are.
